Overview
(October 25, 2023, New York) – Steptoe Commercial Litigation associate Joseph Sanderson has been given the 2023 Above & Beyond Pro Bono Achievement Award recipient by Sanctuary for Families. The award honors attorneys who provide outstanding pro bono representation and advocacy to survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking, and related forms of gender violence. Joseph was recognized for going "above and beyond" in his pro bono representation of his client, a survivor of gender-based violence. Sanctuary for Families thanked him for his "tireless, strategic, inspired, and compassionate work" on behalf of his client.
In addition to his pro bono work on behalf of survivors of abuse and violence, Joseph also advocates for reforms in the court system as a member of bar association committees. It is a testament to his skilled management of this sensitive case and thorough understanding of the workings of the legal system that Joseph was able to use the delays and pace of the court system to achieve such a positive outcome for the client. Had Joseph not been able to obtain the discontinuance of the case, the client may have lost their faith in the justice system that was punishing them for bravely coming forward to stop their abuse.
