Overview
SNL Energy extensively quoted Steptoe energy partner Marc Spitzer in an article titled "Protests at FERC Leaders’ Homes ‘Intolerable,’ Ex-Commissioner Says.” The article, published March 7, discusses an attempt by opponents of natural gas pipelines and LNG export terminals to intimidate members of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) by targeting the commissioners at their homes. The “FERC Valentine Project” asked protestors to send mock Valentine's Day cards to the homes of FERC commissioners with messages describing the health and environmental impacts of decisions to grant permits for pipelines and LNG terminals.
Mr. Spitzer, a former FERC Commissioner, says: "This is intolerable behavior, in my opinion. If this was a superior court judge, you would have the FBI involved."
Mr. Spitzer adds: “Getting rid of all gas production is unrealistic because the lights would go out. The economy would suffer. You would have mass unemployment. It would be an absolute disaster if what they want became reality. But that doesn't mean they are not entitled to advocate for that.”
