Overview
(November 12, 2020, Washington, DC) — Steptoe has won the "Matter of the Year" Team Award in Global Competition Review's 2020 GCR Awards for its involvement in T-Mobile's $26 billion acquisition of Sprint and the required divestiture of assets to DISH Network.
The US Department of Justice, Federal Communications Commission, and two federal courts conditionally approved the deal subject to structural remedies making DISH Network the nation’s fourth mobile carrier. A Steptoe antitrust and telecom team led by Pantelis Michalopoulos assisted DISH in convincing these agencies and courts that the deal would not be in the public interest without the remedy, and that it became in the public interest by virtue of the remedy.
The GCR Awards are based on a nominations process followed by a readers' vote of the cases, law firms, lawyers, economists and enforcers they believe excelled in 2019. The winners were announced at a virtual awards ceremony on November 10. Steptoe was shortlisted for three team awards this year relating to two matters the firm served as counsel on.
