Overview
Caitlin Ames counsels clients on the construction, operation, and maintenance of major energy, transportation, and other infrastructure projects. She assists clients in navigating permitting and environmental review processes before federal, state, and tribal agencies, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Surface Transportation Board. She has experience with a wide range of federal and state environmental laws, including the National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, National Historic Preservation Act, and Endangered Species Act.
Caitlin represents clients in litigation challenging environmental reviews and permitting decisions for major infrastructure projects and in disputes involving the operation of major international pipelines. She has experience at all stages of litigation in federal and state trial and appellate courts.
Prior to joining Steptoe, Caitlin was a law clerk for the Honorable Peter J. Phipps of the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Representative Matters
- Represent a pipeline company with respect to challenges by Wisconsin Native American Tribe and the State of Michigan to close an international pipeline.
- Part of a Steptoe team that obtained a $171.6 million judgment after a four-week bench trial for the operator of crude-by-rail transloading facility pursuing fraudulent transfer claims arising from breach of a take-or-pay contract. The team was recognized as a Runner-Up for The AmLaw Litigation Daily Litigator of the Week for this result.
