Steptoe Hosts Annual Pro Bono Reception 2026

Overview

(July 16, 2026, Washington, DC) – Steptoe hosted its annual Pro Bono Reception, celebrating our pro bono clients, leaders, and accomplishments. The event honors recipients of the John Nolan Award for Pro Bono Excellence and Steptoe attorneys who completed over 100 hours of pro bono service in 2025.

John Nolan Award for Pro Bono Excellence recipients:

  • John O'Connor – for his longstanding commitment to advancing housing justice in the District of Columbia.
  • Domestic Violence Resentencing Team: Julia Gatto, Ida Adibi, Rose Beattie, Jackie Crooks, Lizzy Hayashi – for their successful effort in reducing the criminal sentence of a survivor of domestic violence under New York’s Domestic Violence Survivors' Justice Act. 

The award honors the legacy of former partner and firm leader, John Nolan, who spent over 50 years at Steptoe, litigating high-profile matters before the Supreme Court and remaining active on dozens of pro bono matters well into his 80s. Nolan was a decorated Marine in the Korean War, receiving a Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. A key negotiator, Nolan helped secure the return of thousands of Americans in the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion. He was also a founding member of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights.

We heard encouraging remarks from Gabby Majewski, Executive Director at the DC Affordable Law Firm, and Sylvia Soltis, Director of the Pro Bono Program at Legal Aid DC. Gabby served as the keynote speaker and conveyed Steptoe's deep commitment to pro bono work, saying "pro bono is not an obligation but an extension of our values." Sylvia introduced John O’Connor during the awards ceremony.
