Overview
Meghan Newcomer focuses her practice on complex civil litigation, white-collar criminal defense, and government and internal investigations. Meghan has litigated complex commercial disputes on behalf of companies across a variety of industries in both state and federal court and in arbitration proceedings. Her practice involves all phases of litigation, from managing broad discovery to drafting dispositive motions and appellate briefs. On the criminal side, Meghan has substantial trial experience defending individuals in white-collar criminal matters and has participated in multiple criminal trials in federal court. Meghan also has experience representing clients in high-stakes investigations by the US Department of Justice and the New York State Attorney General's Office.
Active in her pro bono practice and her community, Meghan has represented clients in immigration, clemency, and human trafficking matters, including a successful suit against a human trafficker that resulted in a significant settlement for his trafficking victim. Meghan also has a keen interest in election law, and is part of Steptoe’s team working with Election Protection to ensure all voters have an equal opportunity to vote. Meghan is an active mentor and served as the co-chair of Steptoe’s Associates Committee for two years. She currently co-authors Steptoe’s popular SDNY BLOG.

- Lead associate defending a multi-national commercial real estate firm in five cases around the country asserting claims for tortious interference and theft of trade secrets, securing favorable rulings across multiple jurisdictions, including:

- Winning orders from the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division (First Department), dismissing all claims with prejudice
- In a matter pending in Illinois, winning summary judgment on all remaining claims, as well as an order assessing attorney fees against the Plaintiffs after a contested hearing in which Ms. Newcomer cross-examined Plaintiffs’ expert
- Third chairing a contested ICDR hearing between two satellite companies that resulted in securing an arbitration award of $50 million in a breach of contract dispute
- Defending businessman in federal loan fraud and money laundering trial in Central District of California involving prosecutorial use of tainted evidence, including arguing multiple motions and delivering the opening statement
- Defending CFO in a first-of-its-kind accounting fraud trial based on statements about a non-GAAP measure, and successfully briefing an array of issues related to restitution, resulting in denial of government’s request for restitution
- Representing an executive of a Swiss bank in a tax fraud investigation of the bank by the Department of Justice
- Defending former president of public university accused of wire fraud
- Representing global automobile manufacturer in investigation by the Department of Justice
