Overview
(July 25, 2025, Washington, DC) – Steptoe hosted its annual Pro Bono Reception celebrating the firm's pro bono clients, leaders, and successes. The event honors recipients of the John Nolan Award for Pro Bono Excellence and Steptoe attorneys who completed over 100 hours of pro bono service in 2024.
John Nolan Award for Pro Bono Excellence recipients:
- Toni Ianniello, Senior Counsel, Insurance – for her career-long commitment to advancing civil rights, women’s rights, and pioneering new law protecting the privacy of domestic violence survivors.
- Linda Bailey, Of Counsel, Govt. Litigation – for her representation of survivors of on-campus sexual abuse and prisoners seeking humane conditions of confinement, while mentoring others in their pro bono service.
- Nassau County NY Voting Rights Team: Mike Scavelli, Evan Glassman, David Kahne, Ida Adibi, Elizabeth Goodwin, Kylie Clouse, Laura Niday, Ciara Davis, Jason Abel, Lorrie Marcil, Andrew Golodny, Isabella Inouye, Ruby Donaghu, Kim Gulino, Sara Gilbert, Mary Sherman, James Padilla – for their multi-year effort to institute just voting district maps that better reflect the diverse racial composition of Long Island.
At the event, attendees heard from several speakers highlighting our commitment to pro bono, including the Honorable Anthony C. Epstein, Senior Judge, Superior Court of District of Columbia, and former Steptoe partner, and Elizabeth Koo, Interim Director, Economic Justice for Workers Program, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF).
John Nolan was a former Steptoe partner and firm leader. The award pays homage to his over 50 years of practice at Steptoe, where he remained active on pro bono matters into his 80's. Nolan was a decorated marine in the Korean War, earning a Purple Heart. He was also a founding member of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights.
