Overview
(April 16, 2018, Washington, DC) — For the second consecutive year, Steptoe has been recognized by Global Arbitration Review (GAR) on the GAR 100. Now in its 11th year, the GAR 100 is a comprehensive and independent guide of about 100 firms “approved” for international arbitration by the publication’s editors. The list includes practices of all sizes from all parts of the world, which have worked regularly on “serious” international arbitration matters before credible arbitrators, all audited by GAR.
In a profile of Steptoe’s international arbitration practice, the editors write that “Steptoe & Johnson counts GlaxoSmithKline, Cigna Insurance, Canada’s Northern Dynasty Minerals and Motorola among its clients, and has advised the governments of Canada, China, the Dominican Republic and South Korea.”
The firm is currently handling investment treaty claims against Montenegro, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, and continues to represent two insurance companies in claims arising from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010.
The profile of Steptoe also notes the 2017 addition of Brian Egan, the former legal adviser to US Secretary of State John Kerry, and Lucinda Low’s appointment to an International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes tribunal. In addition, an external source praises Steve Davidson as a “real international statesman” who “has pleaded and won some very big investor-state cases.”
In 2016, a Steptoe team led by Matthew Coleman took one of the top prizes at the annual GAR Awards, winning in the category “International Arbitration Practice that Impressed.”
