Overview
Global Arbitration Review highlighted Steptoe in a February 16 article titled "Canadian Miner Reports Win in Zambian Electricity Dispute."
The firm secured a victory for its client Kansanshi Mining (KMP) who was in a dispute with Zambian Electricity Supply Corporation (Zesco) over electricity supplies. A tribunal ruled in favor of KMP on several key issues including the appropriate tariff for electricity supplied to the Kansanshi mine. According to the article, Zesco was ordered to return funds that KMP had paid into a segregated account pending the arbitration, and KMP was also awarded its costs. Steptoe partners Juliya Arbisman and Robert Mockler represented KMP, a subsidiary of Canada’s First Quantum Minerals, in the arbitration and related English court proceedings.
