Overview
MLex quoted Yumiko Takahashi in a July 8 article titled "Japanese Policy Makers Support EU's Goal for Foreign Subsidy Rules to Check China." The article discusses how the European Union's plan to restrict business activities of companies receiving foreign subsidies, a new policy that takes particular aim at China, could affect a broad range of businesses and may also capture Japanese enterprises. Policy makers in Japan voiced their support of the EU's goal to rein in China's growing influence, saying it also mirrors domestic concerns.
Takahashi says: "In Japan, subsidies tend to be regarded as positive, whereas the EU has concerns that unregulated foreign subsidies may distort fair competition in the single market under its state-aid rules. Japanese companies should be aware of this."
