Overview
(April 12, 2019, Washington, DC) — For the third consecutive year, Steptoe has been recognized by Global Arbitration Review (GAR) on the GAR 100. Now in its 12th year, the GAR 100 is a comprehensive and independent guide of about 100 firms "approved" for international arbitration by the publication's editors. The list includes practices of all sizes from all parts of the world, which have worked regularly on "serious" international arbitration matters before credible arbitrators, all audited by GAR.
In a profile of Steptoe's international arbitration practice, the editors write that the firm's "most impressive results to date have been for the von Pezolds, a Swiss-German family of farmers, in a pair of ICSID claims against Zimbabwe concerning the controversial land reform programme of former president Robert Mugabe."
Steptoe's private clients include ExxonMobil, GlaxoSmithKline, Cigna Insurance, Canada's Northern Dynasty Minerals, Motorola, British satellite company Inmarsat Global and South Korean consumer electronics group LG.
The firm is representing investors in claims against Montenegro, Tanzania and Venezuela, having previously acted in claims against Turkey and Jordan.
The profile of Steptoe also notes the additions of Teddy Baldwin and Chris Paparella with mentions of Mark Moran, who has experience in international trade disputes before the WTO; and Brian Egan, a former legal adviser for the US State Department.
Steve Remp, chairman of Seawind Capital, singled out Steptoe partner Steven Davidson. "He's a real international statesman, and has pleaded and won some very big investor-state cases," Remp says.
