Overview
(January 3, 2025, Washington, DC) — Steptoe recently represented Istanbul-based firm client Sisecam, one of the global leaders in the glass and chemicals industries, in its acquisition of all remaining shares held by the Ciner Group in Sisecam Chemicals Resources LLC (SCR) and Pacific Soda LLC (Pacific). With this agreement, Sisecam's ownership in Pacific and SCR has increased to 100%. Pacific manages an in-development natural soda ash mine in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, which will produce 5 million tons of natural soda ash annually upon completion. Additionally, Sisecam’s stake in the actively operational Sisecam Wyoming LLC through its ownership of SCR has risen to 51%, with the remaining 49% owned by the US-based NRP Trona LLC. This Wyoming facility has an annual natural soda ash production capacity of 2.5 million tons.
This strategic step brings Sisecam closer to becoming the global leader in soda ash and natural soda ash. Soda ash, essential for glass production and numerous other industries, continues to grow globally, and applications are being developed in other rapidly growing sectors, particularly in energy storage, such as batteries.
The Steptoe team was led by Scott Fisher, Bob Shuftan and Irene He, with contributions by John Abramic, Evan Abrams, Lauren Azebu, Brian Fleming, John Kavanaugh, Michael Weiner, Sabina Jacobs Margot, and Siobhan Smith.
