As Steptoe's chief innovation officer, Don Sternfeld focuses on ensuring the firm's technology stack remains at the cutting edge. His unique approach to innovation stems from more than a quarter-century of experience in senior executive roles and as a highly sought-after consultant for both national and international law firms. Applying a proactive approach to overseeing the firm's technology-based infrastructure, he is responsible for spearheading Steptoe’s information technology, information governance, eDiscovery, trial support, and paralegal programs. With in-depth knowledge and industry insight, Don is dedicated to examining and ethically implementing the latest advancements in the legal technology space, including the firmwide use of proprietary generative AI tools.
Don has broad experience in law firm management, having been directly responsible not only for technology but also library services, records management, client intake and conflicts-of-interest, litigation support, patent and trademark prosecution administration, paralegal services, trusts and tax operations, and project management. In his role as technology leader, Don has been instrumental in implementing a multitude of solutions, including financial systems, business continuity, practice support, and research and knowledge management.
Don speaks frequently on innovation and emerging technologies at industry and technology-focused events. He also writes for various trade publications, and has been interviewed several times on the topic of artificial intelligence in the practice of law. He is a graduate of Haverford College and performed as an opera singer in New York and Philadelphia before turning his sights to technology.
