Overview
(October 29, 2024, San Francisco) — Steptoe LLP has expanded its Intellectual Property practice with the addition of patent trial lawyer Jim Brogan, who joins the firm as a partner in San Francisco.
Jim represents technology and life sciences companies in high-stakes patent trials and other technology-related commercial disputes including domestic and international arbitrations. This includes working diligently in the early stages of disputes to find solutions that best align with his clients' strategies and needs. He has experience representing clients in key patent litigation venues, including the Eastern and Western Districts of Texas, the District of Delaware, the Eastern District of Virginia, the Northern District of Illinois, the Northern, Central, and Southern Districts of California, the International Trade Commission (ITC), the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Jim represents and has represented clients ranging from startups to established corporations, including LG Display, BASF Corp., Super Micro Computer, F45 Training, Flexicare, Holochip, Motorola Mobility, Gevo, Enfish, Innolux, Picolight, and Monolithic Power Systems.
Additionally, Jim is an adjunct professor at the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law, where he teaches a patent litigation course. He is also a frequent presenter on patent litigation and prosecution topics. Jim is a co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Intellectual Property and Technology Law Institute, which is an annual continuing legal education event in Denver, and he has presented on several topics involving patent ligation, infringement risk, claim construction, and patent litigation budgeting over the years.
"Jim has a wealth of knowledge in patent litigation and an impressive background representing clients across major patent litigation arenas," said John Caracappa, co-leader of the Intellectual Property Practice.
"His extensive trial experience and track record of success representing high-profile companies in their most complex patent matters greatly adds to our Intellectual Property group as it operates at the intersection of business, policy, and the courts," Added co-leader Jay Nuttall.
Over the past two years, Steptoe's Intellectual Property practice has handled a number of significant matters. This includes securing a major trial victory for American Axle and Manufacturing against Neapco after a nine-year, multi-patent infringement battle among the two Tier 1 automotive suppliers; securing a nearly $65 million jury verdict for inventor František Hrabal and his company Coda Development s.r.o. against Goodyear Rubber and Tire Company in the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio; and a significant trial victory for The Solaria Corporation at the ITC.
"Steptoe's Intellectual Property practice offers a robust platform through which I can support and advise on a client’s patent litigation approach," said Jim. "Having successfully represented clients in cases and trials across the key patent litigation venues in the United States, I look forward to contributing to the exceptional work being done at this world-class firm."
Jim joins Steptoe from King & Spalding. He received his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University.
