Overview
(September 2, 2022) – Steptoe & Johnson LLP secured a win for Express Mobile, Inc. for $40 million against Shopify, Inc. Express Mobile owns patents related to internet and mobile technology and argued that Shopify's website-building tools infringed its patents. A Delaware jury said in their verdict that Shopify infringed upon Express Mobile’s patents, awarded Express Mobile a $40 million lump sum, and rejected Shopify's argument that the patents are invalid.
Partner Jay Nuttall said: "We are very pleased with the jury’s verdict in favor of our client finding that their patented technology was an important and valuable improvement that was being used by Shopify."
The Steptoe team was led by partner Jay Nuttall with partners John Abramic, Katherine Tellez, and Michael Dockterman and associates Christopher A. Suarez, Tron Fu, and Robert Kappers.
The case was featured in Bloomberg Law, Law360, and Reuters.
