Overview
The Lawyer featured the case Mark McLaren v. MOL and others in its article "Unveiled: The Top 20 cases of 2025." Steptoe is representing Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha in this high-profile class action.
The class action was initiated in February 2020 after a 2018 European Commission decision that several shipping companies colluded to manipulate car delivery prices. The claim value, estimated between £86.1 million and £215.8 million, has seen multiple settlements. The remaining defendants, including our client Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, are defending against these allegations.
This case is the first of its kind to proceed to trial under the new UK regime for follow-on cartel damages class actions.
The Steptoe team includes partners Angus Rodger and Charles Whiddington, along with associate Yumiko Takahashi.
