Overview
Angus Rodger has been described by Chambers UK as a "very knowledgeable" lawyer who "really adds value to the business" with his "solution-oriented" advice. In over 30 years of practice, he has run a wide range of commercial disputes, including advocacy in the English courts (High Court, Court of Appeal and Competition Appeal Tribunal) and international arbitrations. He has particularly deep experience in antitrust disputes and insurance.
Antitrust litigation and arbitration
For over 15 years, Angus has handled competition (antitrust) claims in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Competition Appeal Tribunal, including the trial of one of the first opt-out collective proceedings.
- Defended Japan Airlines in the air cargo litigation, which were multiple lawsuits in the High Court. These were the highest-value cartel claims to have been brought in the English courts. Global Competition Review award for cartel defence case of the year.
- Defended LG Chem in Microsoft Mobile Oy v Sony Europe Limited and others, a High Court claim alleging that suppliers had overcharged Nokia for handset batteries. Stated claim value $2 billion. The claim was dismissed.
- Represented a Defendant in an arbitration concerning alleged overcharges (Finland Arbitration Institute).
- Defended shipping company NYK in Mark McLaren Class Representative Limited v MOL (Europe Africa) and others. The collective proceedings alleged that indirect purchasers of vehicles were overcharged as a result of a cartel between carriers. Stated claim value £215 million. One of the first opt-out collective proceedings to go to trial, and one of The Lawyer's Top 20 cases of 2025.
- Defended NYK in Volkswagen AG and others v MOL (Europe Africa) and others, a High Court and CAT claim alleging that a cartel among car carriers led to overcharges on shipments worldwide over a period of 17 years. Stated claim value EUR 3 billion.
- Represented NYK in cartel litigation with Volvo in England and Sweden.
- Defended Tokai Rika in PSA v Autoliv and others, a CAT claim alleging that a cartel among auto part manufacturers led to various vehicle OEMs overpaying for occupant safety products. Stated claim value $800 million.
Insurance and reinsurance
Angus is listed in Who's Who Legal: Insurance & Reinsurance, and achieved rankings as a leading lawyer for insurance and reinsurance claims in Chambers UK, Chambers Global and The Legal 500. He has authored or contributed to three books on insurance and reinsurance law. He was formerly chairman of the insurance chapter of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association, and vice-president of the insurance chapter of Lex Mundi.
- Represented insurers in numerous arbitrations regarding coverage issues under Bermuda Form policies, including coverage disputes relating to pharmaceutical liability issues and the Deepwater Horizon incident, with claim values of hundreds of millions of dollars.
- Representing an insurer in High Court litigation relating to liabilities for PPI mis-selling.
- Advised insurers on COVID-19 claims under numerous properties (contingency, property and retrocession).
- Advised reinsurers on coverage for a major port explosion.
- Advised cedants on coverage for Russian aircraft losses.
- Represented an insurer in High Court and appellate litigation concerning subrogation recoveries arising out of an aircraft accident in Italy.
- Counsels insurers and reinsurers on transactions, regulation and policy wordings, as well as advises on property and casualty, life accident and health, surety, financial guarantee, business interruption and contingency.
- Handled innovative insurance and ART transactions, such as BAE Systems' $4 billion FRIP, Saab's $1.2 billion FRIP, transformer structures, operational capital relief arrangements, and pension buy-in/buy-out contracts with a value exceeding $500 million.
General commercial litigation and arbitration
Angus has handled a wide range of other complex and high-value commercial disputes, for example:
- Representing a former director in multiple High Court proccedings under FSMA section 90 (Aabar and others v Glencore and others), stated claim value £3 billion. One of The Lawyer's top cases of 2026.
- Represented a financial institution defendant in an LCIA arbitration regarding an alleged $1 billion fraud.
- Represented a Claimant in a dispute between the buyer of a cement business and the buyer's investment bank (LCIA arbitration).
- Represented a Defendant in High Court proceedings alleging breach of a joint venture to develop several commercial properties.
- Represented a commercial agent in a claim against a multinational pharmaceutical company for wrongful termination of the relationship (ICC arbitration in Kuwait).
- Represented the respondent in RiverRock v IBSP [2020] EWHC 2483 (Comm), the leading English authority on the interaction of the arbitration and insolvency regimes.

Represented a multinational insurer in mediating the unwinding of an insurance joint venture in the Middle East, and arbitrated an issue arising out of the separation.
