Jessica Rothschild is an associate in Steptoe's Washington office, where she is a member of the Litigation Department.  Ms. Rothschild assists in a variety of complex commercial litigation matters.  Her work has included appellate, insurance coverage, legal malpractice, and securities arbitration cases.  Ms. Rothschild is experienced in fact development, motions practice, document management, and trial preparation.

Ms. Rothschild is also actively involved in Steptoe’s pro bono program.  She recently researched and co-briefed an appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in a case involving a pretrial detainee who was beaten by prison guards.  The Third Circuit found in favor of Steptoe’s client and remanded the case to the US District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania for trial on the Section 1983 allegations.

Following the court’s decision, Ms. Rothschild co-first chaired the federal jury trial.  Her responsibilities included preparing witnesses for trial, deposing party-witnesses, conducting direct and cross examinations, and arguing motions in limine and jury instructions.

Ms. Rothschild also represented a client who had been convicted of murder and served over 19 years in prison.  She authored a petition for writ of actual innocence, which the Baltimore City Circuit Court granted, and the client was released from prison.  In recognition of her work on this matter, the Steptoe team was presented with a Defender of Innocence Award from the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project.
