John Caracappa is a partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Intellectual Property group. Mr. Caracappa focuses on patent litigation. He has represented Fortune 500 and major international companies whose technologies include injection molding systems, automotive transfer cases, chip scale packages, excimer lasers, microprocessors, internet routing systems, and global positioning systems.

Mr. Caracappa has significant experience handling all aspects of patent litigation, including managing large joint defense groups, and is currently a first–chair litigator for one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers. Mr. Caracappa has also recently represented:

• A large automaker in a case involving the use of a trunk in the bed of a pickup truck
• A technology company in a case involving mobile alerts services
• An electronics company in a case involving navigation systems
• An electronics company in a case involving touch screen displays
• An automobile company in a case involving navigation systems
• An LCD manufacturer in a case involving the manufacture and use of LCD monitors
• An electronics company in a case involving the use of global positioning technology in wireless telephones
• Three large automakers in cases involving the design and programming of microprocessors
• An IT company in a case concerning internet routing systems and the associated control software
• A joint venture in a $500 million case relating to automobile transfer cases
• An electronics company in a case involving the packaging of semiconductor chips

Prior to joining Steptoe, Mr. Caracappa practiced law at a prominent Washington law firm, where his work included intellectual property litigation and counseling. He has litigated in a number of federal courts, including the Eastern District of Texas and the District of Delaware. Mr. Caracappa has also litigated before the International Trade Commission.
