N. Hunter Johnston is a partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Government Affairs & Public Policy practice group.

Mr. Johnston has represented clients in governmental affairs and legislative matters in Washington, DC for over 20 years. He has extensive experience working with the House and Senate leadership on both sides of the aisle and has an intimate knowledge of Louisiana public and corporate politics.

Mr. Johnston has extensive experience in developing and financing independent power projects, both domestically and internationally. More recently Mr. Johnston has focused on the development of gasification facilities in the United States and the use of substitute natural gas as a fuel for electric power. Mr. Johnston is involved with implementation of the Department of Energy Loan Guarantee Program authorized in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and is providing advice regarding applications related to the fossil, renewable, and nuclear solicitations. He has actively lobbied Congress and various Administrations since 1986 in issue areas including energy, tax, telecommunications, appropriations, defense, transportation, and infrastructure.

He was extensively involved in the Congressional response to Hurricane Katrina, representing the City of New Orleans and Jefferson Parish during this critical time and is closely identified with the flood control programs that have been implemented to protect this key area of the country. In addition, he has been active throughout Southeast Asia, concentrating his attention and time in China, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, and Thailand.

Mr. Johnston is a 1982 graduate of Tulane University and received his Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in 1985. He was a clerk for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana in 1985.
