Serving as trusted advisers, we frequently undertake strategic, multijurisdictional counseling roles as needed to assist in our client’s affairs, particularly when the client does not have a family office, or where the family office requires specialized knowledge and planning skills. Our deep understanding of how our clients’ business interests and financial goals intersect with their personal planning needs enables us to effectively help guide clients through their most important transactions, as well as events in their personal and business lives. By way of example, we have advised numerous clients on the succession of their business interests, whether to another family member or through the sale of the business, as well as the resolution of business disputes. We also have provided planning and implementation for corporate, real estate, investment fund, and other transactions ranging from tens of millions to billions of dollars at stake. Clients of our private client practice also seek our advice on issues relating the formation or investment in a start-up company, employment and intellectual property matters, and guidance in commercial and other types of litigation.
Many of our clients have cross-border business interests that require sophisticated tax planning and advice. We have advised clients on a wide range of corporate, partnership, and individual tax issues both domestically and internationally. Our experience includes using special classes of equity for tax planning; identifying highly appreciated assets for designated members of the family in connection with corporate and estate planning; and advising on the use of partnership and other entity structures for real properties held by the individual, family-office, trust, or estate. Our deep engagement with our clients’ business and other financial transactions enables us to be particularly effective in the use of sophisticated estate planning tools, such as grantor retained annuity trusts, dynasty trusts, and sales and gifts to intentionally defective grantor trusts, to meet our clients’ needs. We also frequently advise clients on the organization and restructuring of various investment products and investment funds throughout the world. Our experience also includes advising clients on issues such as the most efficient approach to owning, managing, and transferring real property, artwork, and other assets in multiple countries.
