Overview
Algirdas Semeta concentrates on EU law of financial services, with a particular focus on insurance and reinsurance law and regulation. He works with EU and third-country clients on EU and national regulatory requirements for reinsurers and insurance distributors, market access issues, as well as international standards applicable to the reinsurance sector. He brings to clients significant experience with supervision of reinsurers and insurance distributors, compliance with conduct of business rules, and insurance contract law questions, in particular in a cross-border context. He also assists clients in the proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Outside the insurance and reinsurance sector, Algirdas advises on third-country aspects in other financial services areas, such as banking, asset management, and investment. Beyond EU financial services, he has experience with issues of the EU internal market barriers and the application of general principles of EU law. Prior to joining Steptoe, he worked at the European Commission in the Directorate General for Internal Market and Services, where he focused on equivalence regimes in EU financial services legislation, access to EU market for third-country operators, and the powers of the European Supervisory Authorities.
