Overview
On January 29, 2024, Inside EPA quoted Seth Goldberg in an article titled, “SAB Eyes Pushing EPA To Explain ‘Discrepancy’ In Arsenic Risk Findings.” The article discusses members of the Science Advisory Board (SAB) expressing concerns over a perceived "discrepancy" in the EPA's draft risk assessment of inorganic arsenic. The panel is likely to recommend addressing the difference between the estimated "safe" exposure level for non-cancer harms and a novel statistical approach. Two potential approaches are suggested, involving the development of a new reference dose using neurodevelopmental data or applying a database uncertainty factor to make the existing reference dose more conservative.
Steptoe senior counsel and chairman of the trade group Arsenic Science Task Force (ASTF), Seth Goldberg, reiterated a call for the assessment to undergo an additional peer review. He said SAB’s “discussion… highlighted this assessment is novel in many ways. Due to the importance of [arsenic policies, EPA should] resubmit the draft for another panel review once it incorporates the advice you are providing.”
