Overview
USA Today quoted New York partner Michael Vatis in a June 28 article titled “Officials Warn That US Travelers to Rio Olympics Face Hack Risk.” The article discusses how travelers to the Olympics and other destinations abroad face an increasing threat of having information stored on electronic devices hacked by spies and cyber criminals.
Mr. Vatis, a former FBI cybersecurity official, tells USA Today that it is increasingly common for Americans to take “clean” laptops or other personal devices with them abroad to avoid the espionage risk.
“Companies and individuals are definitely more aware of the risk when it comes to traveling to countries such as China or Russia, and so business travelers are more apt to take clean devices when visiting those countries as opposed to, say, the (United Kingdom) or Germany,” he says. “But other companies’ policies more generally require the use of clean devices on any foreign trip, in recognition that even US allies engage in industrial espionage against US companies.”
